Alive in Baghdad delivers some fascinating footage from Iraq, stuff that drives home just how complex the situation is on the ground. For example, here:
...they're covering the accidental damage to a small (but crucial) medical clinic and pharmacy which occurred when the local militia called in the U.S. to take care of a series of car bombs that were discovered in a nearby parking lot. Our guys tried to detonate the bombs safely, but screwed up and destroyed a number of nearby buildings. The locals don't seem to know who to be pissed at: al-Queda, the militia, or the Americans. All they know is that they no longer have a clinic, lost a couple of privately-owned generators, and no one is in a hurry to do anything about it. Their bitterness will be generational.
Meanwhile, AiB also covered this alien-yet-familiar Christmas celebration by the National Evangelical Baptists of Iraq.

"Republicans have become the party of fear, and Democrats have become the party of hate."
Penn illustrated the point by saying that he dropped by a booth at a fairground in '04, one that was promoting Kerry's candidacy. He asked the people there to tell him something they liked about Kerry without referencing something bad about Bush. They couldn't do it.
But at that same kind of booth in '08, the result would be very different. Obama supporters could probably go on for hours about the things they like about him.
Which makes me think about those who complain about all the Obama Love out there. Isn't this the kinda thing you should expect? After eight years of nothing but opposition, these folks have something they actually want to support. Of course they're gonna wax rhapsodic here and there... they're coming out of a bitter coma, and they're looking to make up for lost time.
Even if you loathe Barack (and I can't imagine loathing him or McCain, honestly), you've gotta accept that on one level at least, he's already been incredibly good for the country, purely on the basis of pulling one of our parties out of a massive depression.

I don't know if this is sad or funny. Or both.

This is what McCain is up against:
It captures one of those "holy shit" moments, where you're finally old enough --or the candidate young enough-- to look at a presidential hopeful and think, "This guy looks like me."
There's no way I could ever connect with GWB. I can't even connect with Hill-n-Bill's swingin' '70s key-party ethos. But giving your wife dap? Oh, fuck yeah.
Dude is keepin' it real.
